Requirements

To earn the Food Preparation Merit Badge - Greenie Level, complete the following requirements:

  1. Create a 7-day meal plan for your family that relies solely on stored foods. Include three meals per day and ensure the plan meets basic nutritional needs.
  2. Compile a shopping list of non-perishable food items needed to support your 7-day meal plan. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences of family members.
  3. Acquire and properly store the food items from your shopping list. Demonstrate knowledge of proper storage techniques for different types of food (canned goods, dry goods, etc.).
  4. Learn and demonstrate two methods of purifying water for safe consumption in an emergency situation.
  5. Assemble a basic emergency cooking kit that doesn't rely on electricity. Include at least one alternative cooking method (e.g., camp stove, solar oven, or fuel-based cooker).
  6. Prepare three different meals from your 7-day meal plan using only your stored foods and emergency cooking kit. At least one meal should not require any cooking.
  7. Create an inventory system for your stored foods, including expiration dates. Explain your plan for rotating and replenishing supplies.
  8. Demonstrate proper food safety techniques for handling and preparing food in emergency situations where refrigeration may not be available.
  9. Research and list five common food items that have long shelf lives and high nutritional value. Explain why these items are beneficial in an emergency food supply.
  10. Discuss with your counselor the importance of including comfort foods in your emergency supply and add at least two comfort food items to your storage.
